Travelling abroad has become increasingly expensive in recent years due the rising cost of airfares and accommodation. However, there are still plenty of cheap options available for people who would like to minimise their spending while they are on holiday. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a vibrant city with a strong international atmosphere. With its impressive Scandinavian architecture and cultural opportunities, Stockholm is the perfect destination for a budget holiday. Budget airlines running frequent services to the city include Ryanair, Air Berlin, easyJet and Skyways.

Most of the city’s major attractions are located in the inner city area (called the innerstaden), which is the historic core. Here, tourists can explore the Ostermalm, a major shopping area with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. Nearby is the Norrmalm, which is another large commercial area boasting a wide range of shops and Stockholm’s main train station. Meanwhile in the south of the inner city lies Sodermalm, a popular bohemian area and also one of Stockholm’s major nightlife districts. People can also enjoy superb panoramic views of the city from the north of Erstagatan street, which is close to one of the city’s most prestigious hotels, Djurgarden. The Old Town of Stockholm is called the Gamlastan, which hosts some of Sweden’s most beautiful buildings and streets, including the Swedish Parliament building and the Royal Palace.

Budget accommodation near the centre of the city includes Angby Camping, where people can rent cabins or caravans at a very low price, cheaper than horse insurance. Hotel Micro also offers compact rooms beneath the Tegner Hotel with shared bathrooms and is a modern, clean establishment. The Etienne Budget Hostel also provides cheap accommodation with double beds and TVs in every room. The rooms also include hair-driers and combs so that people can look their best before a long night out in the Sodermalm.
